Eden

“YOU HIT LIKE a girl.”

“That’s because I am a girl, you sexist loser.”

“Didn’t you mention earlier that you take some kinda self-defense class?”

I block my face with clenched fists, circling around L as if I know what I’m doing. “Yep. Kickboxing.”

The flashy footwork stops, hands dropping to his muscular thighs. This guy is a definite showoff.

“You’re kidding. What are they teaching you? How to dance?”

“You’re the one who’s dancing around my living room.”

Black clouds hang in the sky, looming ominously over the apartments on the other side of the courtyard. The afternoon light that comes through the bay window is growing dim, but I don’t rush to turn on any lamps.

Instead, puffing and trying to look mean, I gawk at him for a few wonderful seconds. God. What a body. Jeans hanging low on narrow hips, his abs rippling, swirls of ink, bulging biceps, hard jaw, and sexy-angel face. Forget about fighting. He only needs to stand there radiating hotness to slay me.

“I train once a week at the moment, what with school and work. That’s why my skills are a bit lacking. One day soon, though, I’ll be able to kick your butt. Then you won’t be smiling at me like that, L.”

His smug smile spreads. “Hit me again. Hard as you can this time. I can take it.”

He drops both fists and waits, staring at me like I’m his dinner. Gingerly, I step forward.

“In the gut. Go.”

I shift into position and pop two hard, relatively speaking, jabs into his gorgeous stomach. He doesn’t even flinch.

“Man. Don’t lift your hips up! Exhale when you let that fist rip. Try it again.”

I do. And I made the ‘oof’ sound on impact, not him, the big lug of muscle.

“Jesus.” Ducking and weaving around my pathetic swings, he says, “Tell me the name of this fine establishment you’re attending, and I’ll make a note not to recommend them to anyone.”

“You think you’re a real tough guy, don’t you? Imagine you’re some kind of amazing fighter?”

“I know I’m an amazing fighter. How else do you think I managed not to get myself killed sleeping in doorways and under bridges?”

The thought of him living rough out there, being treated like garbage, makes my brain ache and my heart bleed. I smile like it’s no big deal, as if all my friends are ex-street kids.

Lifting an eyebrow at his package, I say, “And do you always get turned on when you spar?”

One side of his mouth quirks up, and he stalks forward, staring at my lips. With his body not quite touching mine, he kisses me softly. The room spins.

“I know what your problem is, Edie,” he whispers.

“Oh?”

“You’re too constricted by your clothes. Those kicks you were showing me earlier? They would have been a lot more effective if you didn’t have that skirt on. And the shirt.”

“Uh, huh. So, you think if I change into exercise gear, then I might be able to give you a proper beating?”

He smiles slowly, sucks on the corner of his lip.
